New Play Lab Spotlight: Elise Donkor, writer of “Housecleaning”

New Play Lab Spotlight: Elise Donkor, writer of “Housecleaning”

What’s the title of your play?
Housecleaning

Who’s directing your play?
Elena Flory – Barnes

What was the inspiration for the play?
My family is Ghanian-American. As African immigrants, we often found ourselves learning what it means to be black in this country. The African immigrant journey is full of ups and down and I wanted to articulate that through my characters Sisi and Ama.

What was the most challenging thing about writing your play?
It’s easy to get overwhelmed thinking: “how am I going to fit all this in!” or “should I cut this out.” The best advice I received from this workshop is: stick close to the characters! Doing that has really improved my writing.

What is your writing background prior to New Play Lab?
I’m a playwriting newbie! I started taking playwriting courses at the Freehold theater last year and it’s been a great experience!
